Jokowi Expresses Grief Over Sulawesi Flash Flood Devastation

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Friday took to Instagram to express grief and offer condolences to the victims of the devastating flash floods that struck Masamba, North Luwu, in South Sulawesi.

“From Jakarta, I have personally ordered the Public Works and Housing Ministry to immediately work with the South Sulawesi administration in providing assistance along with the local military (TNI), the police, the search and rescue agency, and the South Sulawesi Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD). They are ordered to restore Masamba,” the President wrote on his Instagram account on Friday.

He regretted that such a humanitarian disaster had taken place amid the equally devastating COVID-19 pandemic.

“I offer my deepest condolences to the victims of the disaster,” said Jokowi.

The flash floods that struck Masamba, South Sulawesi, were mainly caused by the sudden high rain intensity on Monday, July 13, which overflowed the rivers heading to Masamba. A number of urban areas in the regency were covered in soil due to Wednesday’s flash flood.

The local BPBD reported that 23 people had died up to Wednesday, July 15, and over 600 people displaced from their homes.
