IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The Jakarta Environmental Agency has collected 860 kilograms of disposable mask waste from households during the Covid-19 pandemic. The agency’s chief, Andono Warih, said that the capital has seen high usage of disposable masks, which are categorized as infectious waste during this pandemic.
“This is evidenced by the large number of used disposable masks that are thrown away along with household waste,” Andono said in an official statement, Friday, November 13.
According to Andono, mask waste is a serious issue that must be addressed carefully as part of an effort to control Covid-19 transmission. Cleaners have sorted and collected infectious waste from households, including used masks, to be handled properly.
The workers handling the disposable mask waste must wear protective gear and garments.
“Because these masks are infectious waste, the Department of Environment and Forestry collaborates with a team from the Hazardous and Toxic Waste (B3) to destroy them by means of incineration,” Andono said.
