Indonesia’s First Police Chief to Be Named as National Hero

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD tweeted on Tuesday that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo will soon officially name Indonesia’s first police chief, Raden Said Soekanto Tjokrodiatmojdo, as a National Hero.

“On November 10 and 11, 2020,  The President will grant the title of National Hero to SM Amin dan Soekanto, and the title of Bintang Mahaputera to Gatot Nurmantyo and Arief Hidayat,” Mahfud tweeted Tuesday, November 3.

The official request to acknowledge Tjokrodaitmodjo as a national hero had initially been filed in 2016 by retired police general Awaloedin Djamin as he believed the first police chief had helped establish and build the Indonesian National Police as an institution.

Raden Said Soekanto Tjokrodiatmodjo was born on June 7, 1908, and started his professional career at the Kepanduan Bangsa Indonesia (Jong Java) and entered the police institution. In 1933, he graduated from the police academy in Sukabumi with the rank Commissaris van Politie 3e Klasse (Class III Commissioner) and was promoted as Class I Commissioner under the Dutch colonialism and became an Itto Keishi under the Japanese regime.

He was then promoted as the National Police Chief by President Soekarno on September 29, 1945, and held the position for 14-years until 1959. Soekanto Tjokrodiatmodjo was Indonesia’s longest-reigning police chief. He passed away in 1993 and was laid to rest at Tanah Kusir public cemetery.
