Indonesia Repatriates Aceh Fisherman Detained in Myanmar

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The Foreign Affairs Ministry has repatriated an Indonesian fisherman from Aceh who was detained in Myanmar. 

“Indonesian Embassy in Yangon (KBRI Yangon) continued the attempt to request for a reduce of the sentence period to the law enforcement authority in Myanmar. The embassy had also several times conveyed a diplomatic note regarding the plea for an amnesty for Jamaluddin,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement on its official website on Saturday, May 1.

Following the ministry’s attempts, an approval for the amnesty for Jamaluddin was granted on April 15, 2021, the ministry stated.

Jamaluddin is a captain of KM Bintang Jasa vessel of Pelabuhan Perikanan Nusantara (PPN) Idi. He was arrested by the Myanmar authorities on November 6, 2018.

He was found quilty by the Kwathaung Court for committing an illegal fishing in Myanmar waters and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment.

Jamaluddin arrived in Jakarta on April 26 April, and was PCR tested and quarantined. The fisherman will be repatriated home to East Aceh Regency.

On January 29, 2019, KBRI Yangon also repatriated home 14 Indonesian crew members of Bintang Jasa vessel, originated from East Aceh.
