Indonesia Adds 27,000 New COVID-19 Cases; Jokowi Asks for PPKM Evaluation

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo announced that Indonesia’s number of daily COVID-19 cases continued to increase and today, Feb. 03, reached 27,197 infections.

He thus ordered Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan as the Coordinator of Java Bali Public Mobility Restrictions or PPKM and Airlangga Hartarto as Coordinating Minister for Economy to respond to the soaring cases.

“To immediately evaluate the PPKM level,” he said today in a virtual press conference from Medan, North Sumatra.

He also asked regional heads, with the assistance of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police, to ensure the public discipline in complying with the health protocols and accelerate vaccinations.

The government decided to extend the PPKM from February 1 to 7, 2022. Under this policy, the majority of regions outside Java and Bali are in PPKM Level 1 and 2. Meanwhile, several regions in Java and Bali are in PPKM Level 2 or 3.

The head of state claimed that the government has anticipated the spike in positive cases and is much better prepared than last year, in terms of hospitals, medicines, oxygen, and health workers.

The hospital’s condition now is still under control. “For that, I ask all of you to remain calm,” Jokowi remarked.
