House Revokes Controversial Article 170 in the Omnibus Draft Bill

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta The House of Representatives (DPR) Omnibus draft bill working committee announced that Article 170 – which allows the government to authorize law changes – has been revoked from the draft bill after garnering widespread criticism for clashing with Indonesia’s legislation and legal system.

“Article 170 has been revoked in the early days of the deliberation,” said NasDem party faction working committee member Taufik Basari on Tuesday.

The omnibus draft bill previously included Article 170 stating that the central government will be authorized to conduct changes on the law’s contents. It also stated that the government can issue a government regulation (PP) with consultation from the DPR speaker.

However, the working committee has not revoked equally controversial laws such as Article 166 which states that a presidential regulation could annul regional-level laws that are not in line with laws at higher levels.
