IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Greenpeace Indonesia’s forest campaigner Asep Komarudin said the curriculum on climate change is urgently needed in national education.
“We need this curriculum to eradicate groups denying the climate crisis and produce the younger generation and future generations who are ready to face the climate crisis,” said Asep to Tempo on Thursday, November 18.
According to him, impacts of the climate crisis are already felt in Indonesia as it is an archipelagic country. The government’s commitment to handling the crisis, however, is only on paper.
Asep outlined that a number of subjects should be included in the climate curriculum, such as the causes of climate crisis so as to educate the young generation to take part in combating the destruction of nature.
The other subjects are disaster response and mitigation and the rights to intergenerational justice. Asep opined that future generations can claim their rights and contribute to a development that considers more on the ecological impacts.
Asep further explained that what differs climate curriculum from environmental education is the underlining of the crisis aspect. Based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, he added, today’s climate condition is already in the crisis stage.
Previously on Wednesday, November 17, the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister Nadiem Makarim said environmental education that puts forward the concept of sustainability is crucial for transforming the country’s education system.
