Govt to Set Standard of Face Masks in COVID-19 Red Zones

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The government is planning to standardize face masks in COVID-19 red zones or areas with high-risk coronavirus transmission.

“Regions categorized as red zones are at a high risk of virus transmission, so it is necessary to set a standard,” said the COVID-19 mitigation task force head, Doni Monardo, on a virtual press conference broadcasted via Presidential Secretariat’s Youtube account on Monday, September 28, 2020.

Doni explained that the task force and several companies had produced local masks with filter quality of up to 70-80 percent. The face covers have also been recommended by the Assessment and Application of Technology Agency (BPPT) and Germany.

“We are trying to develop this further so that the quality of masks for public use will be better,” Doni added.

Despite the standardization, Doni claimed, all types of masks are highly useful in preventing virus transmission. However, people in areas classified as red zones need high-quality masks.

“We need to know the status of the areas we are in. In low-risk areas, we likely don’t need high-quality face masks. But in high-risk areas, especially in red zones, we call on people to use quality masks to minimize transmission risks,” Doni underlined.
