IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The policy issued by the Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Minister Edhy Prabowo upon opening lobster seed export is deemed by many to be a short term beneficial plan and is also prone to be exploited without strict monitoring.
The Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) fisheries observer, Yonvitner, personally argues that lobster seed export is not an urgent matter in Indonesia’s fisheries sector. He did not stop there, Yonvitner also said that the policy will potentially only be beneficial for exporters and fishermen in the short run.
“I think that fishermen can get a quick buck while exporters also gain profit. The profit itself will surely come from the difference in overseas selling price reduced by the base prices from fishermen and export duties,” said Yonvitner on Sunday.
He maintains that the policy will be counterproductive with Indonesia’s long-term export goals as once the lobster seed export is opened, cultivation businesses in export countries such as Vietnam will kickstart again.
“Once the cultivation grows, their cultivation will automatically compete with our cultivation,” he warned.
Another aspect he fears will pose problems is that by opening the exports, there will be possible large export quantities that can fail due to lack of monitoring.
“When Susi Pudjiastuti was the Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Minister, and as the time lobster seed export was banned, there remained many detriments. Moreover, what is happening now, legislations don’t guarantee detriments won’t happen again,” said the IPB observer.
The only solution to enact right now, according to him, is for the government to prepare sanctions for exporters that violate the rules and beef up the security over lobster seed export routes, whether sea or air transport.
