Global Unions Urge Indonesia to Repeal Job Creation Omnibus Law

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta The Council of International Unions (CGU) provided a letter to President Joko ” Jokowi” Widodo’s administration regarding the Job Creation Law (UU Cipta Kerja) which was recently enacted by the bulk of lawmakers at the House of Representatives (DPR).

In the letter, CGU is advising the government to withdraw the Job Production Law. The letter was signed by 9 international workers’ union leaders.

” Total, the law appears to put the interests and needs of foreign financiers ahead of employees, neighborhoods, and the environment. We are concerned that the procedure and substance of the Omnibus Law on Task Creation are not in line with Indonesia’s human rights obligations under worldwide human rights law,” CGU composed in the letter, which was provided on Tuesday, October 6, 2020.

Although the CGU acknowledges that trade unions were associated with the discussions with the legal body, yet they fear that no changes have actually been made to show their range of issues.

” Unions highly think that the labor cluster of the Omnibus Law on Job Development will considerably weaken the labor rights and well-being of Indonesian workers and contravenes the existing Employment Act No. 13/2003,” the letter states.

CGU thought that steady and useful commercial relations are the essential base for the nationwide development, and hence gets in touch with the Indonesian government to reassess its current top priorities and the Omnibus Law on Task Creation.
