IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah on February 23, announced Indonesians currently in Myanmar are safe despite the rising political tension taking place there. The latest is the demonstration that took place in front of the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon today.
“Our citizens are generally in good condition and are under the protection of our embassy in Myanmar,” said Faizasyah in Tuesday’s online press conference.
Political tensions arose in Myanmar after the military junta enacted a coup and arrested elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi on February 1, 2021. Thousands of people opposing the coup held demonstrations on a daily basis since February 6.
Demonstrators generally demand the military to free Suu Kyi and other political prisoners.
Amidst the heated situation, rumors arose suggesting that Indonesia had backed a proposal to resolve the situation by holding a new election which is an idea initiated by the Myanmar military. This issue had drove protesters to the Indonesian Embassy.
However, the rumor has been denied by the Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson.
