Fadli Zon: Criticism Against Omnibus Law Should Be Directed at Jokowi

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Fadli Zon, the House of Representatives (DPR) member from the Gerindra Party faction, opined that public criticism against the Omnibus Law on Job Creation should be directed at President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

“Our country adopts a presidential system, so the authority is in the hands of the president. The most responsible person for this law is of course the president,” said Fadli in a discussion of the Political Journalists Forum on Thursday, October 22, 2020.

Fadli added that the President could revoke or postpone the new law through government regulation in lieu of a law or a Perpu.

If such criticism was directed at political parties, he argued it would be troublesome considering they are the pillars of democracy. “So people should not direct demonstrations at political parties. The one who determines the law is at the Palace, not political parties,” Fadli Zon remarked.

The government confirmed that it would continue the Job Creation Law despite many rejections. Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko said Jokowi would immediately sign the new law. The President also continued to communicate with opposing parties, he added.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Workers Union Confederation (KSPI) is still demanding the DPR to conduct a legislative review. Based on Article 20(1) of the 1945 Constitution, the DPR has the authority to make a new regulation to lift the Omnibus Law through a legislative review.
