Expert Argues Indonesia’s Political Dynasty May Curb Development

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta The Nagara Institute executive director, Akbar Faisal, on Thursday said the political dynasty that has embedded Indonesia’s political stage will hinder regional developments. He argues it would prevent significant decisions from being made.

“We will not progress anywhere if we speak about the future of a region with an old approach. Extreme policies that may go against the grain, decisions which may be good for a certain region will not be taken,” said Akbar December 11.

One of the aspects he fears would be burdened is financial management and the fear of political retribution to those who helped a certain political figure rise to power. He believes that the act of ‘paying back those who helped you’ could give birth to legal violations.

Nagara Institute previously mapped regional head elections (Pilkada) candidates who are affiliated to a political dynasty and found 124 candidates have connections to political elites in regional and central governments.

Akbar named a few such as President Jokowi’s son, Gibran Rakabuming, and the president’s son-in-law Bobby Afif Nasution.
