COVID-19 Cases in 3 Provinces Exceed Delta Peak Last Year

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin in a press conference on Monday confirmed that three Indonesian provinces had logged COVID-19 cases that exceeded the number of cases during Indonesia’s second wave driven by the Delta variant in mid-2021.

The three provinces he mentioned are Jakarta, Banten, and Bali. “We can confirm that there are at least three provinces that have logged COVID-19 cases that exceed the Delta wave last year,” the Minister said in a virtual press conference on February 7, Antaranews reported.

This was mentioned after the minister attended a limited meeting which evaluated the implementation of the public activity restriction (PPKM) policy that was led by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

Cases in Jakarta have now reached 15,800, which far exceed the peak number of cases the city recorded in 2021 at 14,600 cases. Meanwhile, the number of cases recorded in Banten reached 14,800, which is 900 more than what the region had in 2021. The third province is Bali with 2,000 cases.

“Other countries have recorded 2-3 times higher compared to the Delta peak,” he said.

The minister explained that the average number of patients treated in hospital facilities in the three aforementioned provinces ranged between 30-50 percent compared to the total number of cases. However, he urged people not to panic as long as everyone stays strict to health protocols.
