BPBD Prepares Evacuation Plans for Mount Merapi Locals

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The Head of the Yogyakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Biwara Yuswantana, said Friday that locals classified as susceptible groups would be evacuated from villages in Mount Merapi’s vicinity such as Kalitengah Lor in Sleman, as the mountain’s status is increased to “alert” status.

“[The evacuation] will either be held on Sunday or Monday. It will commence once we’re ready,” said Biwara in Yogyakarta, November 6.

BPBD will focus on evacuating children, the disabled, senior citizens, and pregnant mothers to the Glagaharjo village hall that can accommodate up to 300 people. However, only 150 people will be evacuated due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

According to the BPBD, there are roughly 500 residents living in the area of Kalitengah Lor, which will be subjected to a complete evacuation as soon as Mount Merapi’s status increases to its highest alert level.
