BNPT Apologizes for Data of 198 Islamic Schools Affiliated with Terrorism

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Head of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) Boy Rafli Amar visited the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) headquarters today, Feb. 3, to discuss the agency’s data on 198 Islamic boarding schools reported to be affiliated with terrorism which recently had become a public concern.

Boy explained that BNPT and MUI attempted to have a common view between differences of opinion.

“I apologize for mentioning Islamic boarding schools that is believed to hurt the feelings of the school management, Muslims. This is surely not the intention,” he said on Thursday, Feb. 3.

Boy argued that he did not mean to generalize that Islamic boarding schools are affiliated with terrorism. He clarified that the affiliation BNPT mentioned was related to individuals, not schools.

“There are individuals who are connected to parties under the legal process related to terrorism,” said Boy after the meeting which lasted approximately two and a half hours.

The BNPT data, he added, summarized the legal process for terrorism cases. According to him, the data was collected for the last 20 years and was used to show how prevention efforts were done so as not to cause a bad impact on society.

The Head of MUI for Organizational Affairs, Noor Achmad, said problems related to data on 198 Islamic boarding schools affiliated with terrorism had been resolved. He claimed that discussions ran dynamically and scientifically which resulted in the same views regarding issues of terrorism. “That we need to anticipate as well as continue to be aware of terrorist movements,” he underlined.
