Bansos Alone Will Not End Poverty: VP Ma’ruf Amin

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta Vice President Ma’ruf Amin on Friday said the government had designed a strategy that will hopefully enable the country to reach zero percent extreme poverty by the year 2024.

He said the goal could not be reached by depending on social aid (Bansos) alone, but must be boosted by community empowerment programs.

“Overcoming poverty can be done by disseminating Bansos and empowerment. However, Bansos alone cannot overcome poverty but it should be done through empowerment,” said the Vice President in a voice recording sent by the VP Secretariat on November 19.

The goal of reaching zero percent extreme poverty, he added, was done gradually throughout 2021 and aiming at reducing poverty in 35 regencies and cities across seven provinces.

The remaining 212 regencies and cities would be handled in 2022 and completed by 2024.

According to government data, there are 900,000 recipients of social aid but the latest data update shows that number increased to 1.5 million people. In 2021, social aid recipients will receive Rp300 thousand monthly cash aid for three consecutive months from October to December.
