IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – A survey carried out by the Press Council in tandem with Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) shows that the Baby Boomer generation sees discrepancies between news reports on COVID-19 with what they perceive as reality.
According to UMN lecturer Albertus Prestianta the survey involved 1,119 respondents who were asked about news coverages on COVID-19 across mass media platforms.
“Those who seek news from online media are dominated by millennials and Generation Z, who are much younger than their preceding generation. Generation X takes it from television and online media while Boomers rely on television,” said Albertus on July 30.
The survey also showed 10.1 percent of the respondents, who mostly consisted of Generation Z, considered the media were exaggerating the situation. Meanwhile, 42.6 percent of the respondents, who were mostly from Generation X, stated that news represented reality but could not or was unable to confirm the actual condition.

Most of the people in this category come from the Baby Boomer generation. Meanwhile, 10.1 percent of the respondents who were mostly Gen Z believed the media were exaggerating the COVID-19 pandemic.
The survey was conducted across Indonesian regions with a margin of error below three percent and 95 percent level of confidence. The survey was held from May to June while the data were collected from May 6 to May 29, 2021.
