Anies Yet to Issue Permit, Monas Reopening Plan Scrapped

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The National Monument (Monas) area management unit (UPK) head, Muhammad Isa Sanuri, said his side had canceled the planned reopening of the tourism site during the transition period to the new normal phase on Saturday, June 20.

“Monas will not yet be reopened tomorrow (June 20),” said Isa via a short message to Tempo on Friday, June 19.

He stopped short of revealing the reason for the cancelation of the reopening and only said instead that Governor Anies Baswedan had not approved of the plan yet. “This (cancelation) is based on the instruction of the city’s leader.”

The management previously announced that the cultural heritage area would be reopened on June 20. The management said there would only be two entry gates available: the southwest gate and another near the Gambir Station. The operational hours would start from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Monas UPK’s head of public order Deddy Nurahmat on Wednesday, June 17, said that visitors would be obliged to pass the body temperature check and wash their hands to comply with the COVID-19 health protocols.
