2,471 Inmates Granted Clemency for Christmas

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta The Law and Human Rights Ministry acting-head of penitentiary in North Sumatra Erwedi Supriyatno  announced the granting of Christmas clemency for 2,471 inmates. Fifteen inmates will even be granted immediate release. 

“Inmates receiving special partial clemency (RK I) are 2,456 people while 15 will receive complete clemency (RK II),” said Supriyatno on Thursday, December 23, Antaranews reported. 

The Christmas clemency is granted to inmates who are well behaved during incarceration for a minimum of 6 months from their imprisonment until May 15. However, inmates who committed crimes under Government Regulation No.99/2012 Article 34A must continue to serve their prison time for a minimum 6 months. 

Meanwhile, inmates related to crimes under Government Regulation No.28/2006 Article 34 (3) must continue serving one third of their sentence. The North Sumatra penitentiary as of December 21, 2021, is occupied by 33,142 prisoners.

For context, inmates receiving Christmas clemency who have served prison time for 6-12 months receive 15 days sentence reduction while those who served more than 12 months are eligible for 1 month reduction prison time.
