Jakarta. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo hopes schools can reopen for the new school year in July, as the government recently began administering Covid-19 vaccine shots for teachers.

Hundreds of teachers and education staff received their first Covid-19 jab at SMA 70 high school in Jakarta on Wednesday.

“We are aiming to vaccinate 5 million teachers and education staffs by June. So that everything can hopefully return to normal when the new school year starts in July,” Jokowi told a conference broadcasted virtually by the President Secretariat YouTube channel.

Indonesia is prioritizing teachers —along with other public service workers— for its phase-two vaccination program. Jokowi said other provinces will also vaccinate their teachers soon.

“We are prioritizing teachers and education staff, so we can start in-person learning at the beginning of the second semester,” he added.

Local news outlet Antara reported the government will inoculate 650 educators from different educational stages and teachers’ associations at SMA 70 on Wednesday. To avoid mass crowding, the vaccination will take place in three waves throughout the day. Each group consists of up to 250 people.
