Supermoon can cause maximum tides at sea: Lapan

No significant effect (is expected) apart from the optimum tides at sea, unless it is along with bad weather condition at sea.

Jakarta – A supermoon, or perigee moon, observed on Tuesday night could lead to optimal tides at sea, Head of the National Aeronautics and Area Firm (Lapan) Thomas Djamaluddin has actually said.

” No considerable effect (is expected) apart from the optimum tides at sea, unless it is along with bad weather condition at sea,” Djamaluddin told ANTARA here on Tuesday.

A supermoon or perigee moon (when the moon is closest to the earth) was observed at 10.22 p.m. local time on Tuesday night (April 27, 2021).

If the supermoon is followed by high waves at sea, the maximum tides can cause tidal floods that overflow even further into the sea shores, Djamaluddin stated.
