Southwest Papua promotes fish intake to deal with stunting

Sorong, Southwest Papua – The Southwest Papua provincial federal government has launched a campaign to promote fish usage among kindergarten, elementary, junior, and high school students in 6 districts and one city to assist lower the stunting rate.

The movement to promote fish usage amongst kids is a strategic step to support stunting reduction in those locations, advisor to the governor, George Yarangga, informed here on Tuesday.

” We have a great deal of fish in the sea which contain high protein. Fish is advantageous for a child’s growth and nutrition, and to reduce stunting,” Yarangga said.

According to him, the movement is a nationwide program that was introduced in 2004 by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) to promote the advantages of fish usage.

” Therefore, the Southwest Papua provincial government invites and understands (the program) through this fish-eating movement that involves children,” he included.

He said he hopes that the campaign will be rolled out in all regions in the province so that it can add to optimal child growth and advancement, and consequently, help prevent stunting.

Southwest Papua province ranked 4th in regards to stunting occurrence at 19.9 percent, according to the Community-Based Nutritional Reporting App (E-PPGBM) on July 20, 2023.

According to head of the province’s Farming, Food, Marine, and Fisheries Workplace, Absalom Solossa, the fish-based meals prepared for the activity variety from grilled fish, fish satay, fish soup, and fish meatballs.

” We prepared a great deal of fish and it might be for 500 children,” he stated.

Fish gives protein which contains fatty acids, such as omega 3 and 6, and can be beneficial for children’s brain development when taken in effectively and efficiently, he included.

” We will perform this activity continually as an effort to reduce stunting rates,” he verified.
