Observe neutrality: Papua cops chief tells authorities ahead of surveys

Jayapura, Papua – Papua regional police chief, Inspector General Paulus Waterpauw, has asked all workers to observe political neutrality in the 2020 local head elections, which are scheduled to be held simultaneously in December this year.

His regulation follows a telegram letter from the National Police Chief, General Idham Azis, number STR/ 800/ XI/ HUK.7.1/ 2020, dated November 20, 2020.

” The National Police Chief, General Idham Azis, issued a secret telegram addressed to all police personnel. The telegram consisted of an order to keep neutrality throughout the simultaneous 2020 Regional Head Elections,” Waterpauw said in a declaration received here on Monday.

In the telegram, the National Authorities Chief has restricted workers from publishing photos or selfies on social networks revealing a thumbs-up indication or with 2 fingers forming the letter ‘V’, as that might possibly be utilized by certain parties to implicate the authorities of taking sides, he included.

Workers have also been directed not to take pictures with prospective regional head candidates, the masses, and sympathizers, he continued.

” The telegram letter declares the standard guidelines [on kinds of conduct] that must not be practiced by all members of the National Cops. The Cops Chief’s guideline applies to everybody, in all positions or ranks,” he included.

He even more said the letter is a follow-up of the chief of police’s order to authorities chiefs of areas that will hold synchronised elections on December 9, 2020.

The Division of Profession and Internal Security (Propam) will carry out rigorous tiered surveillance of the conduct of members of the authorities, Waterpauw informed.

The cops chief’s telegram is likewise a means of avoiding politicization by both members of the National Cops and election individuals, he observed.

” With the telegram, the Cops Propam Department will impose the law on all members who are attempting to strum the order throughout the elections. That whenever there is an offense, the Propam Division will be unbiased,” he explained.

The Papua cops chief included that up until now, preparations for the simultaneous local elections in 11 districts of Papua province have run safely and smoothly.

He stated he hopes the masses and the project groups of candidate pairs in each region will abide by the guidelines. Should there be any frustration over the outcomes at any phase of the elections, celebrations should turn to legal channels instead of event in large crowds, thinking about the COVID-19 pandemic, he added.

Eleven districts are arranged to hold surveys in Papua in December– Yahukimo, Merauke, Keerom, Mamberamo Raya, Bintang Peg., Boven Digoel, Supiori, Nabire, Yalimo, Asmat, and Waropen. (INE)
