Ministry still tracing reason for Indonesia’s COVID-19 patient information leak

The COVID-19 database and examination results of the Kominfo information center are safe

Jakarta – The Ministry of Interaction and Informatics (Kominfo) presently continues to trace the reason behind the supposed hacking of a database consisting of details of the nation’s COVID-19 clients that was circulated in cyberspace just recently.

” The COVID-19 database and assessment results of the Kominfo data center are safe,” Minister of Interaction and Informatics Johnny G. Plate noted through a text on Saturday.

The ministry is presently in the procedure of tracking details on the declared data breach and coordinating with the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) in charge of COVID-19 information security in Indonesia.

Furthermore, the ministry is coordinating to perform an assessment of information centers in other ministries and organizations.

A hacker called Database Shopping offered a database of COVID-19 patients in Indonesia, dated June 18, to a dark web hacking forum, RaidForums.

The hackers declares the information was acquired throughout an information breach on May 20.

The spoiler feature on the dark web programs took information, including the user ID, gender, age, phone number, residence address, and patient status.

The hacker allegedly has 230 thousand users’ data in MySQL format published on the dark web.

In May, a hacker on the dark web offered information of Tokopedia trading platform’s users.

Tokopedia verified an attempt to hack their security defenses, though the user information was verified to be safe.

In the meantime, in early May this year, the Tokopedia e-commerce platform identified the information leak. A hacker claimed responsibility for the leak and later contended to hold information comprising names, email addresses, and hashed passwords of 15 million Tokopedia users.

The approximated number of impacted users was higher, reaching almost 91 million.

” On May 2, 2020, we became aware of the data theft of Tokopedia’s user information by an unapproved third party,” William Tanuwijaya, the Tokopedia CEO, noted in a declaration on May 13.

Soon after discovering the breach, Tokopedia informed users while introducing an investigation and made sure that the accounts and transactions on the platform remained safe, according to Tanuwijaya.

” We continue to guarantee that passwords are encrypted through a one-way encryption process,” Tanuwijaya mentioned.

The online shop business also worked together with the Ministry of Interaction and Informatics and National Cyber and Crypto Agency to examine the case, he exposed.
