Minister: Prohibited radioactive waste disposal must welcome strict action

Jakarta – Minister of Research and Innovation, Bambang PS Brodjonegoro, has stated he supports stringent law enforcement against unlawful disposal of radioactive waste, which can threaten public safety.

” We wish for rigorous law enforcement against anybody who violates protocols or policies on radioactive waste disposal,” said Minister Brodjonegoro at an online event on the Statement of Status Clearance of the Batan Indah Real estate Complex, held from Jakarta on Thursday.

Radioactive waste management need to be carried out by following the treatments that have been established, Brodjonegoro said including, such waste can not be carelessly tossed into landfills as that would cause radiation, which can be damaging to public health.

Radioactive waste should be handled correctly and appropriately by skilled and authorized parties, he stressed.

Radioactive waste management is presently being carried out at the Center for Radioactive Waste Technology (PTLR) under the National Atomic Energy Firm (Batan) in the Research Center for Science and Technology (Puspiptek) location, Serpong.

” There are treatments on the disposal of radioactive waste, and these treatments need to be followed, specifically (when it comes) to the Radioactive Waste Technology Center in Puspitek.

Law enforcement will be supported through supervision of using atomic energy, which will be performed more intensively by the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Firm (Bapeten), he included.

The security and safety of atomic power plants in the Puspiptek area need to constantly be guaranteed by the National Nuclear Energy Company, he specified.

” If somebody needs to understand and decide to utilize (radioactive substances), however not get rid of (radioactive waste) correctly, then there must be police measures,” he continued. (INE)
