Komnas KIPI allays issues over COVID-19 vaccine security

Jakarta – The National Commission on Post-Immunization Accidents (Komnas KIPI) has said COVID-19 vaccines will clear numerous tests before they are administered in Indonesia, hence people must not be anxious about their safety.

A prospect vaccine’s safety is evaluated from the early phases of research– from the stage of animal screening to scientific testing on people, the commission’s head, Prof. Dr. Indra Irawan Satari, said at an online conversation here on Thursday,

” Medical testing begins with the pre-clinical phase [which progresses] to [tests on] animals to figure out [a vaccine’s] security. If the [tests] on animals do not trigger a problem, or death, or opposite impacts, then we can continue to the very first stage of scientific testing,” Satari described.

A vaccine’s security and efficacy is assessed in the first, 2nd, and 3rd phase of medical trials, he averred.

The first phase of clinical testing involves numerous volunteers, while the 2nd includes some hundreds of individuals, he stated.

The 3rd phase of clinical research studies involve thousands of volunteers from numerous countries, he included.

Additionally, prior to a vaccine candidate is cleared for usage, the National Company of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) will examine the outcomes of the clinical trials to figure out the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine, he mentioned.

BPOM will then provide emergency-use permission (EUA) so the vaccine can be used right away, he added.

” The 4th stage is post marketing surveillance, and this will be reported to the KIPI for post-immunization tracking,” he stated and prompted the general public to not worry about COVID-19 vaccine security.

” Vaccine security will be the main focus during production, immunization, and post-immunization tracking. Any post-immunization accidents should be reported,” he included. (INE)
