Just 20% of regions have guidelines on disabled people: Commission

Jakarta – Only 20 percent of areas have regulations on individuals with impairments, and a few of the guidelines are not in accordance with the Law on Persons with Disabilities, according to the National Commission on Disabilities (KND).

” From 514 regions, only around 20 percent have local guidelines relating to (individuals with) disabilities. Some of them are not in accordance with the law; there are still lots of that requirement to be modified,” KND deputy chairperson Deka Kurniawan stated at an interview on the commission’s first anniversary and the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities here on Tuesday.

KND has revealed the hope that every year, regional policies on impairment rights would increase by 20 percent, and by the 5th anniversary of KND, all regional policies will remain in accordance with Law Number 8 of 2016 worrying Persons with Disabilities.

KND will continue to modify local policies that still utilize terms that are thought about degrading and marginalize persons with disabilities in order to get rid of the stigma surrounding them.

” We will carry out tactical cooperation like what has actually been mandated by law and assigned by the President,” he said.

He affirmed that the commission will assist local governments because the problem lies with regional governments that still do not have a complete viewpoint on impairments.

Kurniawan, together with the other KND commissioners, has offered support and asked persons with specials needs to map the state of special needs rights fulfillment in their respective regions.

From the mapping, KND will make an analysis of what requires to be done and advise what the requirements of individuals with impairments are.

” We are also promoting the budget plan to be met,” he included.

In 2022, KND is celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with the style “From Villages and Subdistricts toward an Inclusive and Disability-Friendly Indonesia.” The occasion will happen in Klaten, Central Java.
