Indonesia has 18 months prior to EU Deforestation Regulation enacted

Jakarta – Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has actually stated that Indonesia has 18 months staying to act prior to the implementation of the European Union Deforestation-free Guideline (EUDR).

Hartarto made his remarks to Financing Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati at a conversation organised by the Finance Ministry’s Indonesian National Single Window Firm (LNSW) here on Friday.

” Mrs Financing Minister, Indonesia has 18 months remaining from now, since they intend to carry out the guideline in 18 months,” Hartarto stated.

He stated that the implementation of the European Union regulation, which would identify products as stemming from high-risk, standard, or low-risk countries, will burden the nationwide logistics sector.

Indonesian commodities potentially limited by EUDR consist of palm oil and its derivatives, coffee, soya, cocoa, beef, and wood, Hartarto added.

He kept in mind that rubber, paper and leather and its derivatives are other products that could be potentially restricted by EUDR.

” Logistics will be our urgent issue, since prior to our products are declared as clear we can not send them (to EU countries), or (they may request) extra confirmation,” he said.

Hartarto suggested that organization competition might be another element, besides logging, behind the choice to enforce EUDR.

” This is a policy developed to control other nations. We typically release a policy for our own, but this guideline instead manages other countries,” he said.

Earlier on May 30-31, 2023, Hartarto and Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Plantation and Commodities Fadillah Yusof performed a joint mission to oppose the EU deforestation-free policy.

Throughout the objective, the two ministers fulfilled European Union officials in Brussels, Belgium, to communicate their concern over the policy and its possible effects on the 2 countries.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), during his check out to Malaysia on Thursday (June 8), urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to broaden bilateral cooperation in opposing discrimination versus palm oil items coming from the two countries due to EUDR.
