London – The Indonesian federal government is actively partaking in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA’s) program to manage plastic waste, Indonesian Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the UN and other global organizations in Vienna Dr. Darmansjah Djumala specified.

Djumala made the declaration during a meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi at the IAEA Head Office in Vienna, Austria, on Friday evening, Oct 2, 2020.

At the meeting, both sides discussed the awareness of the Indonesia-IAEA cooperation in making use of nuclear technology for tranquil functions and potential cooperation to respond to national and worldwide development obstacles.

At the meeting, one of the subjects under deliberation was the Indonesian federal government’s dedication to actively take part in the IAEA program to handle plastic waste.

IAEA Director General Grossi has introduced a nuclear technology for managing plastic contamination (NUTEC Plastic) program to facilitate the utilization of nuclear technology for plastic waste treatment and recycling.

Indonesia has the potential to become one of the pilot countries for the NUTEC Plastic Program given that it has the capability to control radiation technology and has trustworthy human resources.

The program will begin in 2021 and include national stakeholders in the treatment and recycling of plastic waste.

At the conference, the ambassador likewise highlighted the Indonesian government’s commitment to taking an active part in carrying out the NUTEC Plastic Program.

To this end, the federal government will include appropriate ministries and technical institutions, including the Environment and Forestry Ministry, Industry Ministry, and National Atomic Energy Firm (BATAM) along with academics, plastic recyclers association, and the national industrial sector.

Combination of the NUTEC Plastic program with the national plastic waste control program will provide extra worth to the provision of ingenious technology for the plastic waste processing market and will help in achieving the target of lowering domestic plastic waste at the national and local scales.
