Government sees significant increase in forest fires in Aug-Sep

We have studied both climate behavior and hotspot behavior and also the timing of the forest fire surge, which balanced the second week, the 3rd week, to the first week of September

Jakarta – Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya Bakar, stated the Indonesian government is expecting a prospective surge in forest and land fires in the months of August and September this year.

” We have studied both environment behavior and hotspot behavior and likewise the timing of the forest fire explosion, which averaged the 2nd week, the third week, to the first week of September,” Siti said after a minimal conference with the President at the Jakarta Presidential Palace on Tuesday.

Siti stated that based on tracking in northern Sumatra, Riau, and Aceh, and parts of North Sumatra, there are usually two crucial stages in the occurrence of forest fires.

The very first stage takes place in March-April, while the 2nd phase falls in June-July, and peaks in August-September, she discussed.

Rain engineering using weather condition adjustment can assist reduce the crisis, she averred. Rain engineering can be carried out based upon the analysis of the Meteorological, Meteorology and Geophysics Company and carried out by the Company for the Assessment and Application of Technology, with the support of Air Force aircraft, she continued.

” That (weather adjustment) can be done and we have actually passed the very first crisis phase in Riau,” said Siti.

She said the very first phase was extremely crucial since it accompanied the COVID-19 pandemic and Eid al-Fitr.

The worried organizations carried out weather modification in numerous locations, such as Sumatra (May 13-31, 2020), to manage smoke from wildfires during Eid al-Fitr, she informed.

” So, there is a connection between the adjustment of rain (and generation of smoke), so the clouds are engineered to be induced, so that they have a great deal of water vapor, so that they produce rain. The rain moistens the peat and fills the reservoirs, so there is no smoke,” she explained.

There are plans to perform weather adjustment once again in Kalimantan, she mentioned. Based upon BMKG’s analysis, hotspots in Kalimantan will be strong with the start of the dry season in July. The hotspots will peak in late August to early September.

” Ideally, this (weather condition modification) can be a solution. Instead of continuing to extinguish it (forest fire), with this, we can methodically get ready for it,” she said.

On the other hand, the main federal government is also coordinating with local federal governments to safeguard forest locations and enhance the tracking system of the National Authorities.
