5.1-magnitude quake hits Papua’s Bintang mountain range

Jakarta – An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 struck Bintang mountain range in the easternmost Indonesian province of Papua on early Wednesday, according to the Meteorology, Meteorology and Geophysics Firm (BMKG),

95 degrees southern latitude and 140 degrees eastern longitude or 57 kilometers southwest of Bintang mountain range at a depth of 19 kilometers, the firm said on its main site.

The tremor did not have the potential to activate a tsunami, the agency said.

No injuries or casualties have been reported,.

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale is considered moderate and capable of triggering damage.

Papua is one of the Indonesian provinces vulnerable to earthquakes.
