Makassar blogger apprehended, flown to Jakarta, released after jobs law tweet

A 36- year-old blogger from Makassar, South Sulawesi, was arrested on Friday for allegedly tweeting incorrect info about the just recently passed Job Development Law however was later released since of an absence of evidence, one of her lawyers said.

The National Authorities detained Videlya Esmerella after she posted a thread on Twitter talking about 12 short articles purportedly included in the law that she stated would disadvantage employees.

In an interview on Friday, National Authorities representative Insp. Gen. Argo Yuwono stated the blog writer’s tweets contained false details and accused her of violating Articles 14 and 15 of the 1946 Lawbreaker Law, which forbid spreading out false details that might cause a public disruption and bring an optimal sentence of 10 years in prison.

Argo declared the blog writer composed the tweets since she was disturbed that she was jobless.

The 12 posts Videlya tweeted about do not appear in the latest draft of the law seen by the Post, but the final text of the law has yet to be made public.

Videlya was apparently released by the authorities on Friday night. She went back to Makassar early on Saturday early morning.

Azis Dumpa, a Makassar legal representative who assisted Videlya, verified the news.

” She was released by the cops because they did not have enough evidence to charge her,” Azis stated.

Azis said the accusations versus Videlya were baseless due to the fact that the material of her tweets had actually been in broad flow for days before she posted the thread, showing that it did not stem with her.

” The articles have actually been flowing everywhere on social networks. The police were just trying to find a scapegoat to make it look like there was a star who orchestrated protests against the tasks law, although it was purely carried out by civilians,” Azis stated, adding that objections to the omnibus law had been standing for months.

Azis stated he thought the authorities had actually required the case and had exaggerated the scale of the situation due to the fact that Videlya was apprehended in Makassar and quickly flown to Jakarta without a summons.

Argo and National Police public information bureau head Brig. Gen. Awi Setiyono did not immediately respond to the Post‘s requests for remark. (dpk/trn)
