Jakarta. Indonesia has beaten its own record in one-day rise of coronavirus cases three times this month, including another new high on Wednesday.
The country reported 3,963 new cases for a total of 228,993. The previous high was 3,861 cases six days ago, outnumbering the earlier record of 3,622 on Sept. 3.
Daily total hit the 3,000 mark for the first time on August 28 and has since been surging to an average of around 3,300 cases per day.
The daily death toll surged by 135, the second-highest rise since the outbreak, bringing the total number of Covid-19 deaths to 9,100. The record number of daily deaths is 139 on July 22.
On a more positive note, the number of recovered Covid-19 patients also surged by 3,036, taking the total number of recoveries to 164,101 or 71.7 percent of total cases.
Indonesia is now dealing with nearly 55,800 active cases of the virus across the archipelago.
Jakarta has recorded 1,294 new cases in the last 24 hours to take its total to 57,469. That’s equivalent to a quarter of the national tally.
No other provinces have ever reported four-digit daily cases since the outbreak.
The capital also reported 31 more deaths for a total of 1,481.
Central Java and Riau
Central Java and Riau have seen escalating caseloads since the beginning of the month.
Going into the second half of the month, Central Java has accumulated more cases than it did during the whole month of August, 4,487 against 4,448.
It has been averaging 280 cases since Sept. 1, in comparison to the daily average of 143 in August. The province has a total of 18,451 cases including 1,179 deaths to rank third among worst-affected provinces after Jakarta and East Java.
Riau has added nearly 2,400 cases month-to-date, making up more than 50 percent of the province’s total cases since the outbreak.
The surge is slowing in Bali but it has added more than 2,200 cases in the last 16 days alone.
East Java reported 372 new cases for a total of 39,181 and registered the highest daily death toll with 35 to bring its total Covid-19 deaths to 2,867.
Newly cases are also surging in West Java, which has averaged 261 cases this month to take its total to 15,231.
Combined cases from the four provinces on Java Island — Jakarta, East Java, Central Java and West Java — accounted for 57 percent of the national figure.
South Sulawesi, which has the biggest caseloads after the top four provinces, has seen resurgence in cases. It kept the daily average within two digits last month, but the daily total has climbed to 111 cases per day since the start of September.
It has a total of 13,747 cases, 164 more from yesterday.
East Kalimantan reported the highest daily rise outside Java, with 217 new cases for a total of 6,317.
Banten, just southwest of Jakarta, saw a three-digit rise for the first time with 138 new cases for a total of 3,774.
Papua and North Sumatra also reported more than 100 new cases in the day.
