Indonesia Reports 6,000 Covid Cases amid Surge in West Java

Jakarta. Indonesia recorded 6,089 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday to bring the total number of cases to 575,796, as the struggle to contain the outbreak continues amid surging cases in major hotspots.

It’s for the fourth time that the daily number has passed 6,000 since the outbreak. The country reported the highest number of daily cases three days ago, with more than 8,300 cases.

West Java is leading the ongoing surge with 1,388 cases to take its total to 59,273. The seven-day average in the country’s most-populous province passed the 1,000 mark for the first time since the outbreak started.

The second-biggest contributor to Sunday’s tally is Jakarta, which added 1,331 more cases for a total of 143,961, more than any other provinces. Jakarta is home to 25 percent of confirmed coronavirus cases countrywide.

East Java, which has the second-biggest total number of cases, reported 572 cases to bring the province’s total to 65,012. It has been experiencing a steady spike in newly cases since two weeks ago.

The total number of cases in Central Java surpassed the 60,000 mark after it registered 528 new cases.

Combined cases from the four provinces alone account for 57 percent of the national count.

The total number of active cases stands at 83,285 to set a new high. It represents 14.5 percent of the overall cases.

Death Toll


An additional 151 Covid patients have died in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 17,740. Daily deaths toll has topped 100 for 15 consecutive days now, also a new record in the Indonesian outbreak.

East Java has the highest number of fatalities with a total of 4,584 Covid deaths, 34 more from the previous day.

Jakarta, which said that the cemetery designated for Covid patients has run out of space earlier this week, comes second with 2,801 deaths.

Central Java recorded the highest daily death toll with another 38, bringing its total number of Covid deaths to 2,462.

None of the remaining provinces has recorded more than 1,000 Covid deaths.

Resurgence in newly cases continued in South Sulawesi with another 174 for a total of 21,569 cases.

East Kalimantan, Riau and West Sumatra are the other provinces where daily numbers have been reaching three digits for the last few months.

Riau is ranked sixth among worst-affected provinces with a total of 21,138 cases, followed by East Kalimantan (21,019), West Sumatra (20,972) and North Sumatra (16,089).

Bali completed the top ten with a total of 14,743 cases amid highly fluctuating daily numbers of infection in recent weeks.

The virus is spreading faster in Banten, where daily count has been within three digits since November 19. A neighbor to Jakarta, Banten has been averaging 154 cases in the past week.
