Jakarta. Indonesia has recorded 3,463 coronavirus-related deaths since the beginning of the month to beat the previous monthly high with still eight days to go, according to the Jakarta Globe tally.
The previous record for the highest monthly Covid death toll was 3,323 recorded in September.
The surge in casualties from the highly contagious disease has been at the alarming level since Nov. 22, the beginning of a lengthy run in which daily death toll has reached three digits for at least 32 consecutive days.
Southeast Asia’s biggest country has recorded a total of 20,408 Covid deaths as of Wednesday, an increase of 151 on the total a day earlier, Health Ministry figures show.
The government doesn’t register deaths from probable cases as Covid deaths although thousands more deceased patients have been buried under the Covid protocols for cautions.
Monthly death toll has topped 3,000 since September in line with a dramatic surge in newly cases.
The virus has killed more people in East Java than in other provinces since the Indonesian outbreak began. The province has recorded a total of 5,353 Covid deaths as of Wednesday, 50 more from the previous day.
National capital Jakarta reported the second-highest number of coronavirus-related deaths with a total of 3,116.
The total death toll in Central Java passed the 3,000 mark after a further 31 Covid patients died on Wednesday.
New High in Jakarta
The country reported an additional 7,514 cases of the virus in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to 685,639.
The total number of active cases stands at 106,528 countrywide or 15.5 percent of the overall confirmed cases.
Jakarta is the hardest hit by the virus when it comes to the number of positive cases, with a total of 167,842 cases. The figure is bigger than the number of cases in East and West Java combined.
Jakarta reported another 1,954 cases on Wednesday, the city’s highest daily total since the outbreak began. It has beaten its own record of daily coronavirus cases three times in the past week.
East Java has recorded a total of 77,651 cases to rank second. The province saw resurgence in newly cases since late November and has since experienced a dramatic surge including a 20-day run of record-breaking seven-day average.
West Java comes next with a total of 76,492 cases amid a major surge in recent weeks. The country’s most populous province has become only the second province after Jakarta to average more than 1,000 cases this month.
Central Java added 912 cases for a total of 74,335.
The four provinces account for 58 percent of the overall cases nationwide.
South Sulawesi has the highest number of cases outside the four giants and has been experiencing its worst rate of new infections since late last month.
It has recorded at least 27,385 cases and 565 deaths since the outbreak started and broken its own record in the number of daily infections four times since Dec. 1.
South Sulawesi has added 6,728 cases since the beginning of the month, three times the number of cases it reported in November.
Newly cases are also trending up in other hotspots like East Kalimantan, Riau and Banten, while several other provinces have been emerging as new hotspots, such as Yogyakarta and Central Kalimantan.
The total number of cases in Yogyakarta in the southern part of Java Island passed the 10,000 mark on Wednesday after reporting an additional 219 cases.
