Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan was still self-isolating at his official residence as daily number of coronavirus cases in the capital city set a new high and the overall death toll passed the 3,000 mark on Thursday.
Anies tested positive for the virus on Dec. 1, only a day after his deputy Ahmad Riza Patria was also confirmed of contracting the disease.
Anies’ wife Fery Farhati shared a touching picture of a family reunion in which Anies stood behind a glass window for the selfie on Thursday.
“Sixteen days have passed without the presence of @aniesbaswedan at home as he is still self-isolating at the official residence. He is really missed here,” Fery wrote on Instagram.
Jakarta is the hardest hit by the virus with a total of 158,033 cases and 3,014 deaths since the outbreak began. The nearest total of confirmed cases at the provincial level was 72,979 in East Java.
The capital reported the highest single-day rise of 1,690 cases while its seven-day average also sets a new record.
The previous one-day high was 1,579 cases reported on Nov. 21.
Starting Friday, the city government requires travelers from and to Jakarta to produce coronavirus free document based on rapid antigen test.
There is a stark difference between social restrictions policies issued by the city and the central government.
According to a gubernatorial directive, offices are obliged to slash their capacity by 50 percent and only operate until 7.00 p.m. Shopping centers, cafes, restaurants, movie theaters, and tourist areas have the same capacity cap, but with a longer curfew at 9.00 p.m.
The central government has advised that office attendance in the city be limited to 25 percent of capacity.
The country has recorded 7,354 new cases in the 24-hour period, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 643,508. Thursday’s count is the second-highest daily number after a record 8,369 cases on Dec. 3.
The total number of active cases sets another record with a total of 97,139 cases, or 15.1 percent of the overall cases.
West Java again reported a four-digit daily number with another 1,277 cases to pass the 70,000 mark. Its share in the national tally has been growing steadily to reach 11 percent on Thursday.
East Java saw a new high in daily infections with 855 cases. The province has beaten its own record in daily total three times this month.
Moreover, the seven-day average in East Java has been setting a new high every day since Nov. 29.
Both East and West Java have recorded more cases in the last 17 days than their monthly total in November.
The surge is slowing in Central Java which added 620 cases for a total of 69,301. Central Java is now ranked fourth among worst-hit provinces after being overtaken by West Java on Wednesday.
Death Toll
A further 142 Covid-19 patients have died since Wednesday, bringing the total death toll to 19,390. Daily death toll has topped 100 for the last 26 days, the most deadly period so far in the Indonesian outbreak.
East Java led the national tally with a total of 5,055 Covid deaths, 39 more from the previous day.
Central Java came third after Jakarta with a total of 2,728, an increase of 30 on its total death toll a day earlier.
West Java is the last province to have a four-digit death toll overall, totaling 1,092 as of Thursday.
