Detainees returned to AGO structure after fire

Twenty-five detainees have returned to detention facilities at the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) in South Jakarta 2 days after a blaze gutted its main building on Saturday evening.

The detainees were left to the South Jakarta District Lawyer building at 9 p.m. on Saturday quickly after the fire broke out.

AGO representative Hari Setiyono stated the cells where the detainees had actually been held remained in good condition as they lay in a separate structure that did not capture on fire.

“The AGO ' s prosecution director had checked the detention centers’ conditions and they remain in excellent condition, so we returned [the detainees] to their initial cells,” Hari said on Monday as reported by kompas.com.

Hari said the detainees were transported to the AGO ' s workplace gradually from Sunday afternoon to Monday morning after the main building stopped smoldering.

The fire broke out on the sixth flooring of the main AGO structure on Saturday and engulfed its entire structure. The fire lasted for more than 10 hours, according to the South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Company.

It took 325 workers and 65 fire truck to snuff out the flames at 5: 30 a.m. on Sunday.

Hari said the detainees were evacuated after smoke reached their cells.

“For their health and wellness, we evacuated them right after smoke reached their cells,” he said.

Hari said the workplace of the assistant chief law officer for intelligence and human resources department had sustained most of the damage from the blaze.

The AGO declares the fire did not ruin important data or files. (nal)
