New tech shocks Indonesia’s battery dreams

The introduction of a low-priced, nickel-free electric automobile (EV) battery might posture challenges to Indonesia, the world’s biggest nickel producer, professionals and top officials have mentioned. Nickel-free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are expected to eat into the market share over the next decade, or until 2030, according to several professionals, including battery chemist Bambang Prihandoko of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI). “It’s most likely we are heading towards LFP because it is extremely safe for electric vehicles and very resilient. It can last as long as the vehicle,” Bambang told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
