Police, Military Chiefs Unable to Contain Forest Fires Will Be Replaced: Jokowi

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo or Jokowi reiterated he would replace police and military leaders who failed to contain forest fires in their areas. According to Jokowi, the regulation pertaining to this action has been in effect since 2016 following the massive forest fires in 2015.

“To all regional military commanders, regional police chiefs, military resort commanders, military district commanders, let me kindly remind you about the rule that we have agreed upon since 2016. The rule remains the same,” said the President in the meeting at the State Palace on Monday, February 22.

“I haven’t changed the rule, which I’m sure everyone here remembers. Which is discharge,” he added.

The meeting was attended by Armed Forces (TNI) Commander Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto and National Police Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo.

In 2015, huge forest and land fires razed several provinces in the country, causing smog to pollute not only Indonesian territories, but also neighboring countries, such as Malaysia and Singapore.

Following the incident, President Jokowi issued a regulation that the leaders of the local police and military would be discharged should there be such incidents in their territories. The President asserted the regulation was still effective to date.
