Law Empowering Civilians as Military Reserves Forces Signed by Jokowi

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta The Joko “Jokowi” Widodo administration is attempting to broaden the role of civilians in the nation’s military defense by issuing the president’s regulation (PP) No.3/2021 on implementing rules of Law No.23/2019 on national resources management for national defense.

The regulation was ratified by President Jokowi on January 12, 2021, and was made into a Law on the same day by the Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly.

The law defines national defense as attempts to defend the country’s sovereignty and security against attacks that threaten the country’s unity.

Public participation in defending the country will be done in numerous ways with one of it being the forming and mobilizing reserves up to fostering the awareness upon state defense. The reserve components will be backing main defense components which the law states as the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI).

The reserve components will be formed by recruiting civilians and training them under a 3-month military training across TNI facilities but will only be mobilized under an ‘active period for the reserve components.’
