Jerinx Sentenced to 14-months Imprisonment Over Defamation Case

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta Musician I Gede Ari Astina, better known by his stage name Jerinx, on Thursday, November 19, was sentenced to 14-months imprisonment and slapped with fines up to Rp10 million by the Bali District Court for defaming the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI).

“I Gede Ari Astina is sentenced to a 1-year and 2-month of imprisonment with Rp10 million fine, with subsidiary one-month imprisonment,” said the chief of the Bali court’s panel of judges, Cakra Ida Ayu Nyoman Adnya Dewi.

Jerinx is charged for violating the Electronic Transactions and Information (UU ITE) Article 27 and 28 after he initially defamed the IDI through his Instagram account by accusing the doctor’s association of being the WHO’s “kacung” – the derogatory term of a servant – in handling the COVID-19 pandemic.

The musician’s detention period will be reduced by his imprisonment he had already undergone throughout the court trials. Jerinx’ sentencing is lower compared to the prosecutor’s charges of 3-years.
