Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan on Thursday extended the city’s large-scale social restriction, or PSBB, until at least the end of June as the capital city enters what he called a “transition period” in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

“The Jakarta Covid-19 Task Force has decided to extend the PSBB for an undetermined length of time and set this June as a transition period starting tomorrow,” Anies said in an online press conference.

During the transition period, some economic activities will be allowed to resume under guidelines and restrictions.

Anies said offices could reopen on June 8, and shopping malls on June 15. He also said places of worship and factories might be allowed to reopen at 50 percent capacity starting this Friday.

The Jakarta provincial government first implemented the PSBB on April 10 in an effort to curb Covid-19 transmission. This is the fourth time the restriction has been extended.

Anies said the deciding factors to extend the PSBB were the city’s pandemic reproduction rate (Rt), daily case rise, recovery rate, hospital capacity and the number of people suspected of carrying the virus but not showing any symptoms (ODP) and suspected patients in hospitals (PDP).

According to Anies, as of Wednesday, Jakarta’s pandemic reproduction rate had fallen to 0.99 from 4 in early March.

An Rt of less than 1 means each infection causes less than one new case and the outbreak is likely to taper off and then disappear.

The city’s daily case rise and mortality rate have also continued to decline.

Meanwhile, experts gave Jakarta’s handling of the pandemic a score of 76 on epidemiological evidence, which supports the provincial government’s decision to declare a transition period.
